I'm loving this Disappearing 9-Patch pattern... Just tried it for the first time. The blocks come out so pretty and rather difficult-looking, when in reality it's super easy!
Here, I've laid out 20 blocks in a sort of darker-then-lighter alternating row pattern, with all of the "darker", cut center blocks going in the same direction -- which draws your eye up the diagonal...
I haven't sewn the blocks together yet since I'm still playing around, but you get the idea!
A very easy block made with 5" squares that has unlimited fun potential. :)

Judy - If you start with 5-inch squares, do you end up with a 12 1/2' block , which would give you a 12-" finished block?
